PIREP REPORTING

Airside Sync streamlines runway condition reporting by combining PIREP and RCR data in one system with automated, real-time insights. This improves compliance, supports decisions, and enables deeper analysis. Pilot input and RCR data trigger alerts, highlight discrepancies, and reveal trends—enhancing safety and efficiency through smarter, data-driven actions.

  • PIREPs integrated with RCRs in real time
  • Automated alerts for reassessment triggers
  • Stronger compliance through data-driven insights

Introducing the integrated PIREP module

Real-time Integrated PIREPs

For decades, pilot reports (PIREPs) have been a vital part of assessing runway conditions. Yet many airports still rely on manual methods that delay action and reduce efficiency. With Airside Sync, PIREPs become a dynamic decision-support tool—digitally integrated, automatically correlated with regulatory standards, and able to trigger alerts when reassessments are needed.

By connecting PIREPs directly to SNOWTAM and RCR, Airside Sync provides instant updates, automated compliance checks, and real-time alignment between pilot feedback and official runway reports. The result is faster response, better coordination, and safer operations across the board.

✔ Significant Changes in Runway Surface Conditions

Any notable change in the type, depth, or coverage of runway contaminants requires reassessment. For example, if contamination increases or decreases by more than 10% in any runway third, a new assessment is warranted.

✔ Weather Changes Affecting Runway Conditions

Environmental factors such as snowfall, rain, or temperature changes that may alter the runway’s condition require immediate reassessment to maintain accurate, up-to-date reporting.

✔ Pilot Reports Indicating Different Braking Action

When pilots report braking actions that differ from the current runway condition report—especially if they experience reduced braking effectiveness—it prompts a new evaluation to ensure reported conditions align with actual runway performance. Specifically, if two consecutive PIREPs report braking action as “POOR” and a RWYCC of 2 or better has been issued for that runway—OR if a single PIREP reports braking action “LESS THAN POOR,” an alert is triggered and immediate reassessment is required.

The power of combining RCR and PIREP in one system

By integrating RCR and PIREP in Airside Sync, airports gain a comprehensive view of runway conditions with instant comparisons between pilot reports and official assessments. This ensures compliance, strengthens decision support, and facilitates post-ops analysis. The system also improves reporting efficiency and alerts airside teams to discrepancies, enabling better decision-making throughout the process.

Ensure Regulatory Compliance

One key benefit is automatic discrepancy detection. Airside Sync continuously monitors PIREPs against the active SNOWTAM. If two consecutive PIREPs report worse conditions—or if a single report indicates “LESS THAN POOR” braking—the system triggers an alert, prompting reassessment and, if needed, a new SNOWTAM. This ensures full compliance with GRF regulations.

Significant Change Indicator

Safe Sky Airside Sync has a function to indicate and notify about the need to publish a new SNOWTAM, whether it’s due to:

  • expired time
  • “Significant change”
The time since last published SNOWTAM is approaching 8h and thus close to expire
The time since last published SNOWTAM is more than 8h and thus there is no valid SNOWTAM
A significant change has been detected (according to the data known to Airside Sync) and a new report shoud be published
All is OK
